This article aims to analyze the challenges due to the limits and possibilities in the process of implementing environmental education in two Pedagogy courses offered by private education institutions in Curitiba. It addresses the environmental education policy for higher and basic education on national (DCNEA) (BRAZIL, 2012a) and Paraná’s extent (PARANÁ, 2013b). Environmental education was studied in the axes of management and curricular organization in which document and bibliographic research was carried out. The last year students, selected at random to participate in the focus group, had their understanding of environment and environmental education verified. The results of this study indicate that the challenges regard the institutional decision on planning and allocating of financial and human resources, in order to meet the current norms which ensure that environmental education is developed in the axes of physical space, management and curricular organization. Other challenges are nominated, such as knowing the socio-environmental reality of the educational institution’s physical space; readjustment of the Institutional Development Plan and pedagogical proposals of the Pedagogy courses in the approach of management environmentalization; the possibilities of inserting environmental education as a content in the curricular components or as a specific subject in the pedagogical matrix of the Pedagogy courses. The last year Pedagogy students recognized that environmental education contributes to broadening the understanding of social and environmental issues in both professional formation and performance in the daily life of the school.
