Abstract

PESTANA, Filomena  and  CARDOSO, Teresa. Use of Wikipedia by Students and Teachers: (dis)encounters between open educational practices?. Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2018, vol.18, n.56, pp.108-127.  Epub Feb 10, 2020. ISSN 1981-416X.  https://doi.org/10.7213/1981-416x.18.056.ds05.

The impact that new technologies have on how we interact, share information, work and learn is undeniable. In the field of Education, mobile technologies and digital platforms, among others, alter the paradigm of interaction and sharing, namely Wikipedia, which can be assumed as a virtual learning environment, in the context of open and distance education. However, to integrate it in the curriculum, it is important to know a priori what concepts and uses make students and teachers of this online encyclopaedia, which continues to arouse controversy. Thus, we present and discuss the use of Wikipedia from the perspective of online higher education students and teachers. In this study, based an extensive and thorough review of the literature, we developed and implemented a survey for these target audiences. The survey was previously validated and made available online. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and it is possible to conclude that the majority of respondents accede to Wikipedia, although there are still a few that do so for academic work. The results present the potential for a possible opening to the implementation of educational activities in this scope. In short, although the practices of students and teachers are favorable to Wikipedia, more training will be needed to enable it to be consistently integrated and common ground between open educational resources can prevail.
