Abstract

SOUTHWELL, Myriam  and  MENDEZ, Jorgelina. A teacher training policy during democratic transition: the National Institute for Teacher Improvement and Updating. Argentina 1987-1989. Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2018, vol.18, n.59, pp.1440-1464.  Epub Feb 05, 2020. ISSN 1981-416X.  https://doi.org/10.7213/1981-416x.18.059.ao07.

This article describes a teacher training experience developed in Argentina during the first government of the democratic transition (1983-1989). It presents particular characteristics due to, on the one hand, the political and social climate in which it is developed and the conformation of the political and educational agendas of that government. On the other hand, discourses that defined in a renewed way the permanent teacher training, giving crucial value to work between peers. Thus, a new institution was created - the National Institute for Improvement and Teaching Renewal. This institution - despite its brief experience - had a significant success in number and geographical spread of trained teachers. There was defined a conception of the teacher that supposed a new role in front of the students, but also in front of the educational institution and that was linked to an agenda marked by the democratizing imperative of the first government of the democratic transition. This article is based on the analysis of the official documentation and the account of its main responsible for implementing this policy.
