Resumen

MUHL, Eldon Henrique  y  KOHLS, Rosana Cristina. The meaning of an examined life: the importance of “Socratic Pedagogy” in contemporary education. Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2019, vol.19, n.61, pp.862-881.  Epub 31-Ene-2020. ISSN 1981-416X.  https://doi.org/10.7213/1981-416x.19.061.ao08.

The following article is based on Martha Nussbaum’s thoughts about the meaning of an examined life in contemporary education. The analysis focuses on the following questions: what is the importance of an examined life and what are the implications of this condition for the formation of individuals in today's complex and plural society? Starting from Nussbaum's diagnosis of the worldwide tendency of reducing education to a process of market empowerment, the aim here is to evaluate Nussbaum’s importance and demands in proposing an education under the Socratic perspective, by pointing out the need for reflection and the development of the capacity of argumentation as bases of the pedagogical formation. It is considered that the Socratic pedagogy, as proposed by the author, is an important reference for the development of a humanistic formation of each individual and the construction of a democratic society.

Palabras clave : Argumentation; Self-exam; Humanization; Democracy.
