This article aims at analyzing the cultural exchange and the hybridization processes which characterize and constitute the first years of the congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Saint Charles Borromeo, Scalabrians, upon their arrival in Brazil, with a focus on the state of Rio Grande do Sul and from a transnational point of view. The space-time delimitation regards the migration of a small group of sisters from Italy and their establishment, initially in São Paulo and, afterwards, their arrival in Rio Grande do Sul and the foundation of their first schools in the state. In a dialogue between Cultural History and the History of Education, and through the historical documental analysis of correspondence, newspapers, photographs and reports, we come to understand the challenges of migration and its ripple effect on the very constitution of the congregation. The experiences of migration by missionary women produced markings, be it from cultural exchanges, struggles with differences and the bargaining processes created by the displacement. We conclude that the congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Saint Charles Borromeo - Scalabrians is created under a transnational condition, between what was prescribed back in Italy and what was experienced in Brazil, in a displacement that involves innovation and negotiation regarding issues of ethics, gender relations and Catholicism itself in the development of their schools.
