DANTAS, Maria José. Female singularity in Catholicism: qualification practices in a path permeated with “thorns and roses”. Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2019, vol.19, n.63, pp.1446-1464.  Epub 30-Jan-2020. ISSN 1981-416X.  https://doi.org/10.7213/1981-416x.19.063.ds06.

This study seeks to cast a look onto the woman’s role in the Church reaching out to its singularity, dignity and peculiarities, through presenting the everyday life with the educational practices taken ahead by young women that choose the catholic religious environment as their field of action. To seek this objective, the study investigates specifically the educational practices developed within the Congregation of “Irmãs Terezinhas”(sisters “Terezinha”), specially with respect to the work of Mother Valdelícia, General Superior for over thirty years. The analysis was performed based on the theorical assumptions of the New Cultural History and History of Education as well as the concepts of charism, cultural capital and religious field of Pierre Bourdieu (1989, 1980, 2005, 2012). Furthermore the strategy of Michel de Certeau (1994) and representation of Roger Chartier (1990, 2002) were also used as reference. The methodology used consisted in bibliographic research, document assessment as well as interviews. Within the sources used are diaries, books, letters, Congregation Chronicle, newspaper clippings, certificates and oral statements. It was possible to conclude, that despite the several difficulties, named “thorns”, the Congregation and the Mother transmitted successfully in the educational and religious fields of Sergipe. Valdelícia built relations with personalities and consolidated herself being respected and appreciated by bishops, priests and other ecclesial as well as civil authorities. Moreover, through her work as teacher, director and Superior Mother, she developed an intense educational activity and became a reference with many contributions for the History of Catholic Education in Sergipe.
