Abstract

Mexico's first intercultural university was founded in 2003 with the purpose of expanding the enrollment of indigenous students in higher education. From this date until today eleven intercultural universities were created. In this context, this article seeks to retrace the history of intercultural universities, as well as the purpose of the intercultural model, showing some experiences of other intercultural and autonomous universities in Latin America. Finally, it presents the main contributions of this model, having as specific case the Intercultural University of the State of Hidalgo (UICEH).
