Abstract

This study presents the results of a qualitative research that aimed to understand, facing the university's social function, the challenges related to learning in the exercise of teaching, in the view of thirteen higher education teachers. In the data production process, we used a questionnaire composed of three open questions. For data analysis, we used some assumptions of Content Analysis. The conclusions point out that the university must excel in the integral training of students, in order to enable them to interfere in their reality, proposing solutions to their problems. The university's most important social role is the socialization of knowledge, particularly to socially marginalized groups. Thus, teaching requires from the university professor innumerable knowledge, among which those related to pedagogical and didactic aspects: how to deal with new information technologies; dealing with personal conflicts, especially between colleagues; understand the students' learning process and how to motivate them, making it evident that teaching is a complex profession for which specific training and institutional processes of professional development of these subjects are necessary.
