Since the beginning of this century, the Brazilian university has been involved in innovations that affect curricular paradigms, the dynamization of university classes through active methodologies, the arrival of the student who, in the words of Veen and Vrakking (2009) presents himself as a “ homo zappiens ”connected with numerous groups of WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram. In this scenario, a challenge for the teacher: how to act effectively with students so that they become competent professionals for the 21st century? This is the objective of this article: to respond to this challenge, based on theoretical studies on innovations in higher education, on our teaching experiences in the last decades, on guidelines for master's and doctoral research defended on innovative curricular projects and teacher training for act on such projects. The trails covered are intertwined with theoretical studies by authors such as Sacristán (1998), Cunha (1998, 2009), Arroyo (2000), Zabalza (2004), Perrenoud (2013); with the exercise of teaching practices and field research conducted and published in articles and books by Masetto (1992, 2003, 2010, 2018) and by Gaeta and Masetto, (2013), presented in national and international works and congresses. Four tracks will compose our reflections and analyzes: the first, focused on the necessary opening of the teacher to the current innovations in Brazilian higher education; the second, rescuing the characteristic of professionalism in teaching; the third highlighting the teamwork; the fourth, showing the construction of a competent teaching action in classroom situations.
