Abstract

CARVALHO, Cristina  and  GEWERC, Monique. The potential of art museums in teacher education. Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2021, vol.21, n.69, pp.539-563.  Epub June 11, 2021. ISSN 1981-416X.  https://doi.org/10.7213/1981-416x.21.069.ds02.

Based on the assumption that experiences with Art can contribute to the construction of the symbolic, to the transformation of the look, the attitude, the subject's place in society, art museums are configured in powerful spaces to provide sensitive experiences and contribute to the teaching authorship. The central objective of the research partially presented here is to understand whether what the museums in the city of Rio de Janeiro offer to teachers contributes to their aesthetic and cultural formation. For the teacher to see the museum as a space for professional and cultural training, an invitation from the museum is needed, an encouragement coupled with freedom for the subject to create their own meanings. The methodological instrument used to produce the data presented here was the semi-structured interview. Museum educators from five museums in the city of Rio de Janeiro were interviewed. The text brings a reflection on central concepts of the theme and an excerpt from the interviews that express the understanding of educators about the concept of museum education and how the activities with teachers in institutions are developed. The partial result of the research indicates that art museums, despite their elitist history, have developed actions with teachers in which the uniqueness of visiting subjects, their culture, history and expectations are considered in a dialogical, participatory, critical and democratic perspective. Education takes an integral perspective and the visit to the museum is seen as a transformative experience.
