The present article investigated the process of incorporation of physical culture by public education in Paraná, especially the insertion of knowledge related to Gymnastica, in the period between the years 1882 and 1917. The documents used were the Government reports, Collection of Laws, Decrees, Acts and Regulations, with particular attention to manuscripts dealing with public education in Paraná. Journalistic sources were also used, found in the following Paraná periodicals: Dezenove de Dezembro, A República, Diário da Tarde, A Notícia and A Tribuna. The analysis of documents indicated a slow process of specialization of Gymnastica, marked by a series of advances and retreats in search of a gymnastics which would contribute to the physical education of youngsters from Paraná. In conclusion, the article points out that in this process of incorporating elements of physical culture, public instruction in Paraná moved towards gymnastics with a solid rational, hygienic and educational appeal.
