BALDEZ, Etienne. The photographer goes to school. The uses of school photography by the heads of primary public education (Paraná, Brazil, 1910-1950). Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2022, vol.22, n.73, pp.729-750. Epub 17-Dez-2022. ISSN 1981-416X. https://doi.org/10.7213/1981-416x.22.073.ds10.
This article turns to the analysis of photography as a source for the history of education, using images that were recorded by anonymous photographers and compiled by Paraná mayors, in response to a request by lawyer and professor Alir Ratacheski, who organized a book for the centenary of Paraná, focused on public education. When organizing the book, Ratacheski classified the photographs of the schools as “illustrative”, and should be followed by the corresponding news item. A way of conceiving the image as an attestation of the writing. Following the publication's organizer's suggestion, instead of being placed at the end of the book, the images could be placed next to the table listing the municipalities and the number of school groups and isolated schools that operated in 1920, for example, or be displayed when he writes about the teaching maintained by the municipalities. This demonstrates the thoughtful organization and the information that would be highlighted linked to photographs. Through the investigation carried out here, it is clear that the government, when sending these photos, made an effort to demonstrate to the state government that schools were built, inaugurated, attended, and provided by the municipality. The photographs register the structure of the school buildings, many of them in wood, and a little of their interior, which allows us to observe the furniture in the classrooms and also pursue the evidence of material school culture.
