The text presents the relationship of belonging between a personal archive and the social and human causes marked by the institutional insertion of the subject in evidence. The formation and organization of a personal archive can express details and interstices of a life, expressed by social, political and cultural contexts. In this research, the archival organization, the contextualization of documents and the historiographical work based on access to primary sources allow the construction of historical narratives about the life of the anarchist professor João Penteado and the history of Modern Schools in São Paulo. Next, the João Penteado Archive will be commented from a possible path of life of this educator and the schools he directed, evoking the memory of experiences of libertarian education in Brazil.
