The text narrates a possible carelessness of a public agent regarding documents that record the history of a municipal school system and the consequent constitution of a personal archive, based on this disregard for collective history. Based on such a narrative, it shares reflections on the power of a personal archive, pointing out possibilities of use and considerations arising from the storage of this material, considering the relevance to the history of education of public education networks and systems. Methodologically, the text is based on descriptive research, in a retrospective longitudinal cut, built from a dialectical approach, with a reconstructive analytical procedure and supported by a bibliographic review. The empirical corpus of reflection is based on personal guard documents, related to a municipal education network in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, rescued from processes of physical exclusion, and kept in private custody for 20 years. In addition to presenting the documents that constitute the archive, the development of the text exposes reflections on the uses of a personal archive and its relevance to the history of education, in addition to working with the concepts of collective memory, by Maurice Halbwachs and place of memory, by Pierre Nora. In summary, the woven reflections conclusively point out that the documents listed in the personal archive are compatible with the relevance of the history of education, and the empirical strength of the data contained in the archive documents indicates that the archive can constitute a place of memory, keeping possibilities of a collective memory.
