The paper presents a theoretical analysis of 36 studies that address the municipalization of education and/or the reorganization of schools, published between 2007 and 2019. in two theses and dissertations repositories: the Theses and Dissertations Catalog (CTD) of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES, initials from Portuguese) and the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD, initials from Portuguese). The topic of the reordering of physical networks is approached from a critical-reflexive point of view, linking it to decentralization of basic education process, fostered by the neoliberal and managerial state model. The analysis carried out through the State of the Question was based on the dimensions or motivations presented by Akkari (2011) with regard to the justifications for implementing new organizational forms and educational policies. It is argued that there is a relation between decentralizing policies, municipalization of education and school reorganization. It was concluded that: a) the reorganization of the physical network is not new, however, in recent decades, due to the demands of international organizations, new forms of political-institutional arrangements were implemented, which inserts the reorganization of schools in the context and agendas for innovation and modernization of educational management; and b) there are different perspectives for the reorganization of the school network, particularly oriented towards giving greater emphasis to the efficiency of the services provided by schools.
