This article aims to present and discuss the evolution of the severity of the themes of the essays of ENEM (Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio, which can be translated as High School National Exam), between the years 1998 and 2022, regarding the motivating texts: ability to read multiple textual genres and knowledge about various areas. For this goal, a documental analysis of the ENEM writing tests between the years 1998 and 2021 was carried out. The discussions were carried out from the structure of hermeneutic interpretation. the analysis undertaken was comparative, evidencing the growth of ENEM since its first edition. The analysis had the following categories: number of applicants, themes of the writing test, textual genres that make up the proposals, as well as the correction criteria. At the end, we found a complexity throughout the editions, requiring greater preparation from the candidates.
