The subject of this investigation was the group of journals in Education in the Centre-West region of Brazil that are registered with the Centre-West regional coordination of the Forum of Editors of Journals in the Area of Education (FEPAE), linked to the National Association for Postgraduate Studies and Research in Education (ANPEd). There are currently 27 journals located in Brasilia/DF, Goiás, Triângulo Mineiro (MG), Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso. We used the ideas of Araújo; Brzezinski (2006) and Weiss (2009), as well as official documents from the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes) and the Carlos Chagas Foundation (FCC). The analysis included a characterisation of the journals, in terms of localisation, start of publication, editors, periodicity, themes, indexers and evaluation within the Qualis Periódicos. Next, the challenges currently facing education journals in the Central-West region were discussed, in particular modernization and professionalization and reaching more robust indexers. It was concluded that there has been an increase in the quantity and improvement in the quality of journals in the Midwest region and it was pointed out that there is a need to face and overcome the current challenges in order to continue increasing the quality of journals.
