Early childhood education is a space-time rich in possibilities for children to expand their cultural repertoires and experience interactions through play. The article presents part of the results of a Master's degree research in Education (Santos, 2024); it is anchored in a qualitative approach and based on the field of the Sociology of Childhood. It aims to discuss how children experience play in the context of Early Childhood Education, what their main interests are in relation to this activity, how they organize themselves, occupy spaces and interact with each other. As methodological strategies, the investigation was based on research with children and made use of observations of situations and moments of play, conversation circles, photographic recordings and dialogues with a group of 3- and 4-year-old children. In order to analyze the results, we opted for data triangulation, which allowed us to identify the most present and recurring themes and aspects throughout the research, which guided the construction of analytical categories. It was possible to see that play in Early Childhood Education is closely linked to the interactions that children build with each other, the experiences they have in the educational institution and the relationships they develop with the toys available.
