Abstract

GONCALVES, Fernanda; BUSS-SIMAO, Márcia  and  DEBUS, Eliane Santana Dias. Body-narrative: babies' games and interactions with books at daycare. Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2025, vol.25, n.85, pp.462-481.  Epub July 24, 2025. ISSN 1981-416X.  https://doi.org/10.7213/1981-416x.25.085.ds05.

This article presents a doctoral research project that aimed to analyze how babies interact with books in the context of early childhood education. More specifically, whether babies have access to books and what interactive possibilities this cultural object promotes. The field research took place at a municipal school in Florianópolis with 14 babies and their teachers. In order to produce a writing that would be close to the babies' perspective, methodological procedures from ethnography were listed. The field data showed that babies' interactions with books are mainly constituted by physical relationships. For babies, books are also toys, and literary texts are also games. The data corroborate the argument that, in Early Childhood Education, books are more than just reading material; they are also play material! Books should be the ones that make up their creations, that are reinvented by the babies themselves, but that, above all, make up their lives.
