Abstract

SANTOS, Ana Lúcia Padrão dos  and  SIMOES, Antonio Carlos. Tradução e adaptação transcultural do “Physical Activity Scale” de Aadahal e Jorgensen. Rev. Bras. Educ. Fís. Esporte [online]. 2009, vol.23, n.02, pp.143-153. ISSN 1981-4690.

The purpose of this study is to translate for the Portuguese language and to make the cross-cultural adaptation of the instrument developed by AADAHL and JORGENSEN to evaluate the physical activity, with the intention to contribute so that a new instrument of research will be available for researchers of the area. The method used for translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the instrument was the translation of the English instrument to Portuguese by two translators and the back-translation of this exactly instrument by two additional translators. A committee of experts was formed to analyze all the versions of the instrument. The committee used as criteria the semantic, idiomatic, cultural and conceptual equivalence. Forty college students answered the questionnaire to verify the viability of the use of the instrument. In the translation process no words or expressions were considered problematic by the translators. The committee of experts considered that the Portuguese version of the instrument is semantic, idiomatic, cultural and conceptual equivalent. At last, the instrument was applied in 20 men with mean age 29 years (SD = 6.0) and mean 48.9 METs/day of physical activity level (SD = 12.3) and in 20 women with mean age of 29 years (SD = 4.7) and mean 46,7 METs/day of physical activity level (SD = 8.0). It is a simple and quick instrument to use. The results found in METs/day are consistent with the original version and indicate viability in its use. New studies send regards so that other properties of the instrument are tested.
