Abstract

SOUSA, Marcos Rogério Capello. Esquistossomose no Brasil: ensinar versus educar. Rev. Bras. Educ. Med. [online]. 2009, vol.33, n.01, pp.144-147. ISSN 1981-5271.

This paper discusses the difference between teaching and educating in the health field. Based on cases of schistosomiasis in adolescents in Campinas, treated by the author in the same service where he acts as professor and attending physician in Pediatrics, the study discusses the way this disease has been approached in the last 50 years, always from an educational perspective, i.e., broader and more complex. This debate can serve as the basis for reflections and critiques on Brazil’s teaching and healthcare model in recent decades, despite the country’s new curriculum guidelines. The study investigates the differences between schistosomiasis in Brazil in the 1960s and the early 21st century, considering factors such as population, migration, living conditions, treatment, etc., besides the role of multidisciplinary education in the change in this situation. Several directions are identified for discussing and reflecting on teaching strategies in the health field.
