MORETTI-PIRES, Rodrigo Otávio. Physicians in public health in the Amazon: gaps in undergraduate training and health services. Rev. Bras. Educ. Med. [online]. 2009, vol.33, n.03, pp.417-425. ISSN 1981-5271.

ABSTRACT Medical training in public health is a topic that has gained increasing visibility in the literature, to the extent that such professionals have worked under the Family Health Strategy (FHS). To investigate whether medical training in the State of Amazonas, Brazil, is consistent with the guidelines for working under the FHS, a qualitative empirical study was conducted, using a focus group and semi-structured individual interviews with students from the last year of medical school at a public university in that State. Since recent medical graduates fill the FHS positions in the interior of the State, it is important to study their training in primary care. The resulting information points to gaps in the pedagogical model in medical school, in terms of training in public health and medical practice in the FHS.
