GONCALVES, Maria Bernadete  e  BENEVIDES-PEREIRA, Ana Maria Teresa. Considerations on medical education and its affective and emotional impact on medical students in Brazil. Rev. Bras. Educ. Med. [online]. 2009, vol.33, n.03, pp.482-493. ISSN 1981-5271.

ABSTRACT This article provides a non-exhaustive review of the evolution in medical education in Brazil since its origins, touching on the various curricular reforms that have sought to improve medical students’ technical training. Interestingly, such reforms have never addressed the students’ mental health and well-being. Medical training has always been considered stressful, but real concern over this aspect is recent. Some studies have attempted to identify the most stressful phase in medical education, and most point to the first year of clinical training. Others seek to identify the most important stress factors, among course-related and individual student characteristics. The study highlights the most frequent diagnoses cited in the literature and provides suggestions to minimize this process in the medical school setting.
