Abstract

The new Brazilian curriculum guidelines in health courses emphasize students’ early and responsible participation in health services, allowing partnerships between the university and services to integrate faculty, primary care staff, and undergraduate students, with public health services as the setting for practical training activities. The objective of the current study was to report on the implementation of such activities as developed by the Educational Program for Health Work at UFMS/Sesau2009. Data were collected from the Program’s legislation, reports from meetings between faculty and preceptors, and individual reports by students, preceptors, and tutors. The Program is a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary example of integration between teaching, health services, and the community. The actions in this study were backed by two lines of research focused on health promotion. Difficulties in the development of projects involved discrepancies in schedules and curriculum levels between students from different years and different courses; such difficulties were corrected through viable alternatives that allowed continuity in the activities. This study highlighted the importance and positive impact of integration between teaching, services, and the community on students’ professional training and the daily work of the professional staff.
