Abstract

BARBOSA, Milena Mazaro; GUEDERT, Jucélia Maria  and  GROSSEMAN, Suely. Problemas éticos relatados por internos com ênfase na saúde da criança. Rev. Bras. Educ. Med. [online]. 2013, vol.37, n.01, pp.21-31. ISSN 1981-5271.

Objective: To know the ethical problems experienced by medical interns, especially those related to child health care, the feelings aroused and students’ suggestions to promote skills for dealing with ethical conflicts. Method: Cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory qualitative study with 40 of 104 interns (38,5%) from the 11th semester of the medical course of Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Data: Collected through a questionnaire requesting: the report of up to 3 experienced situations considered by the student to be an ethical dilemma, preferably during child health attendance, the description on how he felt in those situations, and suggestions on how to promote skills to better handle those problems. Analysis: Of categorical and descriptive content. Results: 84 ethical problems were reported involving: inappropriate professional attitudes, autonomy, violence, end of life; secrecy and confidentiality, communication of bad news, teaching-learning process; fragility of the health care support network and other specific ones. The most reported feelings were impotence and revolt/indignation. Most of the provided suggestions to promote more skills to handle ethical problems were related to the discussion of cases and extending the discipline of ethics. Conclusions: Throughout the academic education, students face a variety of situations they considered to be ethical problems, whose use for discussions and reflection on ethics in everyday life could be one of the main strategies to develop skills to deal with these problems in medical practice.
