Abstract

FIGUEIREDO, Maria das Graças Mota Cruz de Assis  and  STANO, Rita de Cássia M. T.. O estudo da morte e dos cuidados paliativos: uma experiência didática no currículo de medicina. Rev. Bras. Educ. Med. [online]. 2013, vol.37, n.02, pp.298-306. ISSN 1981-5271.

The knowledge of physicians in Brazil is becoming progressively more fragmented, as a result of the growing specialization of medicine. On the other hand, technological progress gives physicians a growing feeling of power over disease and death. The curriculum at Medicine Schools reflects this trend, and by the end of their courses future physicians excel in the science of cure. But when the disease is not subdued by the indicated treatment, and the patient proceeds to death, his physician is less prepared to take care of him. The Medical School of Itajubá (MG) is one of a few in Brazil to include in its curriculum Thanatology and Palliative Care for first, second and fourth year students, complementing teachings of modern medicine. This article intends to show a successful experience in the teaching of the subject to second year student doctors. The two-hour class involved the creative participation of the 6 students.
