NASCIMENTO, Leonel Alves do; FONSECA, Lígia Fahl  e  GARCIA, Ana Carolina Korki Arrabal. Suspensão cirúrgica: perspectiva do residente de medicina em clínicas cirúrgicas. Rev. Bras. Educ. Med. [online]. 2014, vol.38, n.02, pp.205-212. ISSN 1981-5271.

In order to understand the resident student surgeon’s perception of the deferral of surgical procedures, the repercussions and consequences of this event in his work, a descriptive, qualitative study was conducted, based on the analytical method proposed by Martins and Bicudo. The study was conducted at a teaching hospital in northern Paraná, with the participation of ten surgical residents in their final year of the residency program. The analysis resulted in the construction of five categories: Implications for the resident (learning impairment); feelings related to the deferral (frustration, helplessness, loss of credibility and resolution capabilities); communication of the deferral (main difficulty), implications for the patient (dissatisfaction, frustration, abandonment) and strategies to avoid deferral (planning, preoperative care, enhanced material/human resources). It was found that the resident recognizes the impact of deferred surgery in his learning, identifies patient suffering due to the deferral and makes use of strategies to prevent it from happening.
