Abstract

LIMA, Wanderson Pereira. Critical-overcoming approach: the treatment of physical education as a transforming practice of social reality. Educ. Teoria Prática [online]. 2022, vol.32, n.65, e21. ISSN 1981-8106.  https://doi.org/10.18675/1981-8106.v32.n.65.s15861.

Grounded on a seminal work from the field of Physical Education this article contends that education is a social practice directly related to historical events that still affect the development of educational practices. It follows on from a qualitative bibliographical survey that focuses on the critical-overcoming approach, proposed in 1992 by a Coletivo de Autores and which offers elements for attaining a solid, democratic, public, and emancipatory education. It is concluded that endorsing the elements of body culture introduced by this theoretical framework amounts to demystifying Physical Education and education in general as a field of class struggle and disputes. Moreover, it is concluded that education is being treated as a commodity which operates under a neoliberal logic, hence promoting and naturalising social inequality and school failure.

Keywords : Physical Education; Critical-overcoming Approach; Class Struggle.
