Abstract

ABREU, Cristiane Vieira Costa  and  GUARESI, Ronei. Evaluation of the extension effect in the oral reading of isolated Portuguese words. Educ. Teoria Prática [online]. 2024, vol.34, n.67, e68. ISSN 1981-8106.  https://doi.org/10.18675/1981-8106.v34.n.67.s17824.

This study aimed to evaluate a possible effect of the extension in oral reading, particularly in the variable conversion speed. For this, 18 participants from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of elementary school were evaluated. With each of the students, 180 isolated words/pseudowords were recorded, divided into three extension categories: 4 graphemes or less, 5 to 7 graphemes and 8 graphemes or more. Unlike what is documented in the literature, the results of our participants’ oral reading suggest that the length of words does not impact the average time of graphophonemic conversion, both in the reading of words and pseudowords. Regarding the reading of words, the justification for such a finding may be in the profile of our participants, already with an advanced level of learning the writing system, who read more through the lexical route to the detriment of the phonological route—the latter, in general, where the extension effect is more easily observed, as documented in the literature. However, as we did not observe the influence of length on the conversion of pseudowords either, we recommend that further studies expand the scope of proficiency of participants.
