This qualitative research aimed to identify and interpret the mediating role of teacher in the teaching of literary reading, from a documental analysis of student’s activities proposed for the comprehension of literature’s aesthetic language in materials of the “São Paulo Faz Escola” program. It focused on Bakhtin’s theory of Materialist Philosophy of Language and in the studies on Vygotsky’s semiotic mediation reveling a neutralizing approach to aesthetic and ideological functions of texts, presenting an inadequate conceptualization of literary creation, configuring it as product of subjectivist / individualist origin and not as a social and cultural process, endowed with a productive ideological role.
