This article aims to analyze concepts and research of ethnic-race critical studies (especially in Social Sciences) and to discuss how they can be mobilized in the field of Education. From the discussion of the concepts of race and racism the analysis focuses the concepts of: institutional racism; racialization; racial prejudice of origin and racial prejudice demarcates. Through the “critical interpretation of race relations”, the methodological proposal of the study was constituted: an analysis, eminently based on discourse, with the objective of exploring nuances and possibilities of mobilizing a concept for the interpretation of racial inequalities. The article discusses the emergence of these concepts, the propositions of authors who formulated them, the disputes and contradictions presented in the literature, their potential or limits for education research in Brazil. It concludes that the concepts of institutional racism and racialization are consistent and very relevant conceptual tools for research on the education of ethnic-racial relations in Brazil. Relative to “racial prejudice of origin” and “racial prejudice of brand” the analysis helps to understand the racism construction processes and some of his specificities in Brazil.
