The text presents an interview with Zélia Amador de Deus given her important participation in different historical moments in Brazil about the construction of public policies directed to the educational field. The objective was to bring the memories of this important activist as she prefers to name herself for the dossier Race and Culture considering that the context of it relates to the history of GT 21 Education and Ethnic-Racial Relations of the National Association of Graduate Studies and Research in Education (Anped )that emerges in 2001. To understand the meaning of this production it is necessary to listen to this woman who explains how her life trajectory and the scientific production of this field are intertwined and are products of an active political action of many black Brazilians. Consolidating a research group into a research association of this size is only possible because next to it there is an arduous production of affirmative policies. Zélia's memories allow us to understand that research is always a political, academic, and theoretical implication.
