This paper aims to present the reasons for the school permanence of the sertanejos-workers-students who, motivated by their own dreams and determination, remained in the food science course of a vocational high school which is part of the Proeja at Federal Institute of Alagoas (Ifal) – Piranhas campus. We used the life history method as a bridge between the individual and the social based on Cipriani (1988) and Paulilo (1999). The narratives were built using the technique of the Life history interview, (Queiroz, 1988). The voices of the narrators, used as sources, show us that the reasons for the permanence come from cooperation and solidarity among colleagues, family support, encouragement from some teachers, and from the material existence of: transportation, teaching materials and financial aid. In this sense, their permanence involved both symbolic and material needs.
