Paulo Freire had a unique ability to talk about painful and complex themes in a profound manner, with his own musicality and making his ideas accessible to all types of audience. This interview was conducted in 1994 during the Seminar “Literacy as an act of independence” of the Youth and Adult Literacy Movement of Angra dos Reis (MOVA-Angra) in which Paulo Freire was the keynote speaker. Due to health problems, that made prevented traveling to Angra dos Reis, on his own initiative, Paulo Freire invited the coordinating team of MOVA-Angra to record a video-message at his house, to be shared with the participants of the seminar. In this interview, Freire presented his perspective on literacy and citizenship for young people and adults, as well as the relationship between education, politics and the social context, concluding with a testimony of joy and hope in the struggle for more democratic systems and a just social transformation.
