Abstract

MARTINS, Marco Aurélio Corrêa. TIMES OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION IN RIO DE JANEIRO: (1854-1934). Revista Teias [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.especial, pp.386-405.  Epub Feb 18, 2023. ISSN 1982-0305.  https://doi.org/10.12957/teias.2021.5434.

Defining temporalities, such as variations in history, approximates the time lived to historical time. The overlapping of the existential to the cosmic time makes the historian's work a search for understanding the relationships that the present establishes with the past and the future. These questions, raised by the philosophy of history by Paul Ricoeur (2010), contribute to rehearse a time stamp of Catholic schooling in Rio de Janeiro between the decades of 1850 and 1930. These are “lesser times” of the Catholic school within a “greater time” in the history of Brazilian education. The Catholic participation in the Brazilian educational context is taken by its ideological position in relation to the State, marked by the conflict between liberals and ultramontans, and in the typification of the institutional school model, marked by the public destined for it and the way it is maintained. This schooling was impacted by the performance of foreign and national religious. The interpretive essay is based on historiographical production and documentary research, especially by journalistic sources.

Keywords : catholic schooling; History of Brazilian Education; historical temporality.
