Abstract

SOUSA, Mirtes Aparecida Almeida  and  SALUSTIANO, Dorivaldo Alves. DIVERSITY IN THE SCHOOLCURRICULUM: perspectives of basic education teachers. Revista Teias [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.68, pp.147-160.  Epub Feb 13, 2023. ISSN 1982-0305.  https://doi.org/10.12957/teias.2022.54057.

The study of diversity in the curriculum is broad, complex and directly associated with the predominant worldview in a given historical and educational context. This article discusses the understanding of early elementary school teachers of diversity in the school curriculum. It presents the results of a qualitative research, developed through content analysis of semi-structured interviews. The data showed that the teachers that were the subject of this study recognize the importance and the need to address diversity as a significant theme in the school curriculum and seek to include it in their pedagogical practices. They also emphasized the importance of legal support for the visibility of content related to diversity, without which afro-indigenous culture, economic inequalities, diversity of creeds or religious practices, among others, would remain neglected as an object of study. We emphasize the importance of teaching mediation in the understanding of discriminatory and exclusionary practices, opportuning the expression and recognition of silenced and invisible subjects in school and society.

Keywords : diversity; curriculum; elementary education; teaching mediation.
