Abstract

BOFF, Ana Paula; ROSA, Patricia  and  REGIAN, Anelise Mariai. DISABILITY STUDIES IN PROFESSIONAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL EDUCATION. Revista Teias [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.68, pp.291-306.  Epub Feb 13, 2023. ISSN 1982-0305.  https://doi.org/10.12957/teias.2022.57797.

This article is a fragment of a complete research in 2016 that investigated, from the social disability model, how the educational process of disabled students occurs in a technological and professional education institution. The research, of qualitative nature, had as subjects five students who were invited to participate in a semi-structured individual interview. Considering the regularities present in the data, after the content analysis, two categories were listed. The category: Self-establishment at Individual Constitution, enables the appreciation of disabled students singularities, as well as their access to basic human rights such as educational and professional training, representing the social inclusion of this community. Concerning the Architectural and Methodological Accessibility category, the institution's physical structure and the teaching procedures adopted by the professors, are present barriers to the interviewed student's learning process and do not correspond to the assumptions of the social disability model. It can be inferred that the biomedical disability model is still present in the institution, however, there are initiatives by the professors, the technical-administrative staff, and the management team, to overcome this model. As a suggestion the complementary teacher training is proposed, in a systematic way, taking into consideration the principles of the social disability model.

Keywords : professional and technological education; social disability model; educational process.
