Abstract

JORGE, Luciana dos Santos; SILVA, Carla Craice da  and  ALMEIDA, Luciana Schleder. BUILDING AN INTERNATIONALIZED UNIVERSITY: student retention at the at the University of International Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusophony (UNILAB). Revista Teias [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.69, pp.204-217.  Epub Feb 28, 2023. ISSN 1982-0305.  https://doi.org/10.12957/teias.2022.65948.

The University of International Integration of Lusophony Afro-Brazilian (Unilab) was created in 2010 with the proposal to integrate Brazil and Africa. Besides being a university with a massive presence of the black population of the interior of Bahia and Ceará, where the campuses are located, the university has about 25% of the students coming from Portuguese-Speaking Countries (PALOP), mainly from the African continent. This article aims to analyze the issues related to the student retention of Unilab. The research was carried out between the months of january and april 2021, during the pandemic time, with questionnaires and diaries. The diaries bring up questions about financial difficulties, aspects about the development of writing, and, not least, missing family members. It was observed that even students assisted by the Student Assistance Program (PAES) are in a situation of socioeconomic vulnerability. Ensuring the retention of these young people is something challenging, especially due to the specificity of the Unilab project, which demands a look at the trajectories of these students.
