PINTO, Franco Dani Araújo e; RIAL, Carmen Silvia de Moraes  y  SIQUEIRA, Sueli. CHINESE MIGRATION IN GOVERNADOR VALADARES-MG: “first wave” and the challenges of leaving the country of origin in conflict situations. Revista Teias [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.69, pp.294-305.  Epub 28-Feb-2023. ISSN 1982-0305.  https://doi.org/10.12957/teias.2022.65962.

Governador Valadares, in the east of Minas Gerais, is known as a city of emigration culture, especially to the United States. This article, however, presents an aspect that highlights the other side of this phenomenon, which is the presence of foreigners in this city of Minas Gerais. The research presented here is an excerpt from the doctoral thesis in Human Sciences by the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), which analyzes the migration of Chinese people to the territory of Governador Valadares, from the narratives of the own immigrants based on their experiences and trajectories. Ethnography was the chosen research method and the data collection technique adopted was the oral history interview. This article presents the two great migratory waves of Chinese people to Brazil and to Governador Valadares - the first, between the 1950s and 1970s; and the second, from the 1990s. To meet the thematic proposal of this edition, it was decided to turn attention to the Chinese who migrated to the city of Minas during the call known as the first great wave, due to their particularities. In this sense, the research reveals that among the first Chinese who arrived in Governador Valadares, the factors that led them to leave their country of origin were generally related to contexts of war and political conflicts. Thus, for some leaving their homeland was not an option or part of a previously designed project, but an alternative for survival.
