Abstract

SOARES, Rodrigo Lemos  and  BUSSOLETTI, Denise Marcos. YABA'S STRENGTH: representations of the pomba-gira and female identities in terraces in the southern region of Rio Grande do Sul. Revista Teias [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.70, pp.57-70.  Epub Feb 23, 2023. ISSN 1982-0305.  https://doi.org/10.12957/teias.2022.67099.

The article that follows aims to describe the representations of the pomba-gira, a female figure from Quimbanda, close to the forces of the yabás, mothers-de-santo of terreiros in the southern region of Rio Grande do Sul. The production of the same was possible by carrying out nine semi-structured interviews with directors of terreiros, after approval of the project by the ethics committee in research with human beings. As results, it was possible to observe that the representations of the pomba-giras are close to the ideas of women who break with social rules that define their social roles as subjects, as domestic and obedient beings. The representations of the female entities of Quimbanda exemplify the counterpoint, resistance and other ways of being a woman in society, as they go against obedience and silencing of wills. The mothers-de-santo, owners of the terreiros fulfill the function of developing notions of freedom and cults for the bodies of all subjects that pass through their hands and, in turn, teachings.

Keywords : pomba-giras; terraces; cultural dynamics.
