Abstract

BRERO, José Guilherme Degásperi  and  RONDINI, Carina Alexandra. CENSUS UNDERREPORTING OF STUDENTS WITH HIGH ABILITY/GIFTED IN 2020: effects of pandemic or neglect?. Revista Teias [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.71, pp.476-486.  Epub Feb 28, 2023. ISSN 1982-0305.  https://doi.org/10.12957/teias.2022.65416.

This theoretical essay, of exploratory nature, aims to analyze the possible causes of the reduction in the number of enrollments of the school census of high ability/gifted (AH/SD) students, which occurred in 2020, compared to 2019. For this, the data provided by the School Census available on the website of the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (INEP) will be used as the basis for the research. The concept of gifted will be initially outlined, as well, a brief contextualization of the theme in Brazil, the monitoring tools available and those provided for by law, underreporting and its effects and the rights of high ability students. It was verified that there was a fall in enrollment in 14 states, in one there was no change in the number of students (Acre), and in 11 states and in the Federal District there was an increase. Among the states that showed reduction, two stand out, the State of Paraíba with 79.17% and São Paulo with exorbitant 1,053.29% drop, these being the probable responsible for the sudden decrease in the total number of students with AH/SD enrolled in 2020. The results show the fragility of the education systems regarding the identification and educational care of students with AH/SD, and it is urgent the need to strengthen this area so that students with higher potential are not lost, which can contribute to the construction of a better world.

Keywords : high ability/gifted; underreporting; census.
