Abstract

The present work aimed to analyze the curricular components of the degree course in biological sciences of a public university in the state of Pernambuco in order to describe whether they contribute to raise awareness among teachers in promoting local cultural knowledge in science and biology classes and in acting to develop strategies that promote contextualized science/biology teaching. For that, the course curriculum was analyzed through reading the menus, syllabus, objectives and competences in the curricular components and then they were categorized by using some approaches and their components content analyzed. Overall, nine disciplines were analyzed because they relate to the selected approaches and meet the investigation proposal of this work. The analyzes indicate that the curricular components bring approaches linked to cultural diversity, which can contribute to a training that promotes the awareness of future teachers for intercultural dialogue in science/biology classrooms and methodologies that relate scientific content to realities school locations with regard to school cultural diversity, thus enabling contextualized teaching. However, it is important to point out that not always the proposed elements are actually experienced in training courses, thus more specific research is required to monitor the development of the disciplines on a daily basis.
