This article presents the results of a qualitative research about the perceptions of second grade students from elementary school concerning the school accountability policies and the external evaluations in high performance schools in five municipalities of Ceará state. It was found that the exaltation of merit in the researched is behaviorally induced both by the discourse of merit pay for school professionals and by the positive and negative reinforcement of student awards, in which are preached the ritual of tests and exams, the control and classification based on the results achieved, and use competitions to assess prizes and punishments.
