Abstract

NASCIMENTO, Fabiana Ferreira do; CRUZ, Mara Monteiro da  and  SILVA, Thatyana Machado. NO COMMUNICATION IS NOT AN ALTERNATIVE: the use of speech generator devices for students with autism. Revista Teias [online]. 2023, vol.24, n.73, pp.129-147.  Epub Aug 24, 2023. ISSN 1982-0305.  https://doi.org/10.12957/teias.2023.74067.

The speech generator device (SGD) has been presented as a promising tool to favor the communication of people who have complex communication needs. The focus of this research was to present an introduction about the use of this device and its effects for a child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, in the school environment. The objective was to discuss its potentialities and demonstrate, through the use of the communication matrix, the evolution of the student's communicative profile after the intervention procedures. The article presents an excerpt from a doctoral research that used a quasi-experimental A-B design as a method. The results pointed to the exponential use, by the student, of alternative communication as a way of expressing desires and feelings.

Keywords : speech generator device; communication matrix; alternative and augmentative communication; technological resources; autism.
