At the end of 2017, as part of the visual arts pedagogical activities guided by teachers, high school students created graffiti on the walls of the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia de Goiás (IFG) in Formosa. The analytical effort in this article focused, then, on the discourse against graffiti as an expression of conservatism in the educational field, which had a strong presence in debate in Brazilian society at that time. In the case under study, it was possible to perceive that conservatism is put into action in the school environment through the following actions: denial of academic knowledge, criticism of institutions, surveillance of teaching activities, disqualification of educational work and dissemination of moral panic. For the present study, official documents were gathered with complaints or praise for the educational action, the respective institutional responses to the ombudsman and the Public Ministry, as well as meeting minutes and various public letters of support prepared on the occasion of the facts. The change in the visual pattern of the campus generated disputes that made explicit the latent ideological divergences, bringing to light different understandings about what art is and how it should be developed in the public school space.
