LAGE, Ana Cristina Pereira e MENDES, Clarisse. THE LAMPARINA CHARACTER: education and racism in the magazine O Tico-Tico (1928-1944). Revista Teias [online]. 2024, vol.25, n.78, pp.11-30. Epub 11-Out-2024. ISSN 1982-0305. https://doi.org/10.12957/teias.2024.84132.
The article is about the character Lamparina, a black girl, created by José Carlos de Brito e Cunha, which was present in the comic books of the children's magazine O Tico-Tico. This character's debut took place in 1928, and his last appearance took place in 1944, these being the years that comprise the time frame adopted. Various sections of recreational activities were included in the magazine with the aim of, through entertainment, educating readers in a moral, civic, and civilizational perspective. The central objective of this work is to understand what teachings the author intended to transmit to readers through Lamparina, since the magazine should be considered as a non-school educational instrument, whose target audience would be families with the financial resources to buy it and generally made up of white children. The methodology uses documentary analysis, whose sources are the comic strips in the magazine and which present stories in which the character appears, with the intention of making racist stereotypes explicit. It is intended to show what Lamparina highlights about the representation and social imaginary of black people at that time.
