SIQUEIRA, Juliana da Silva e COSTA, Ana Luiza Jesus da. A BLACK CONSCIOUSNESS CENTER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SÃO PAULO: the mission of the creator of a quilombo. Revista Teias [online]. 2024, vol.25, n.78, pp.48-64. Epub 11-Out-2024. ISSN 1982-0305. https://doi.org/10.12957/teias.2024.83723.
This article aims to present the protagonism of Jupiara Castro, a black working woman, who was one of the people who created and founded a “Black Consciousness Center” within the University of São Paulo (NCN/USP) in 1987. The main purpose of this paper is to reveal who Jupiara is, what her mission was, what her contribution was and what legacy she left to the future generations at the NCN and outside this territory that we understand as a quilombo inside the university. The research sources includes interviews with members of the Center, statutes, publications and documents produced by the NCN and the USP as well as publications in others general information vehicles, such as the university and mainstream presses. According to the interviews and analysis of documents, it was possible to verify that Jupiara promoted a great debate at the University of São Paulo about racism, anti-racism and the inferior position of black women and men in Brazil. Furthermore, over the time, this political debate was also transformed into educational actions aimed to the black and non-black communities, to promote critical, reflective and emancipatory education. It was concluded that Jupiara founded the Black Consciousness Center to promote affirmative actions aiming the education of the black population, in the public arena, with literacy, preparatory university, language, culture and art courses and reeducating society about ethnic-racial relations in Brazil, marking the struggle of black people for higher education, which is in the genesis of racial quota policies.
