This article originated from the knowledge collected and debated within the thematic group História da Educação maranhense within the Grupo de Estudos e Pesquisas Infâncias e Brincadeiras, linked to the Universidade Federal do Maranhão. We aim to examine the education of babies and young children throughout the 19th century in the State of Maranhão. To do this, we use the bibliographic and documentary study of newspapers and magazines found in the online archive collections of the Biblioteca Benedito Leite, located in the capital São Luís. The 19th century witnessed the desire for popular education, but also the scarcity of resources that kept many children out of school. Among the results of this research, we can demarcate the process of institutionalization of kindergarten as segregationist, in which it became an innovative access for the wealthy classes and a social struggle for the poor population. The creation of public kindergarten became a reality after much social desire, however this education still emphasized the moralizing role for children in socioeconomic vulnerability.
