RIBEIRO, Angelita Soares e PEREIRA, Fabíola Mattos. THE CHILDREN AT VISCONDE DA GRAÇA: silences into shouting. Revista Teias [online]. 2024, vol.25, n.78, pp.225-241. Epub 11-Out-2024. ISSN 1982-0305. https://doi.org/10.12957/teias.2024.83729.
This article reflects upon children's stories that emerge from the work of the Núcleo de Extensão e Pesquisa em Educação, Memória e Cultura (NEPEC), connected to the Câmpus Pelotas-Visconde da Graça (CaVG), from the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia Sul-rio-grandense (IFSul). In possession of an institutional collection, the NEPEC has been opening and closing boxes for ten years, from which lives who have passed through the institution since its foundation in 1923 as Patronato Agrícola Visconde da Graça (PAVG) has surged considerably. Through documentary ethnography, such as Penélopes, we have been pursuing and challenging the work of memory. We unravel stories from those portrayed as heroes and stress societal promises that are fulfilled as barbarity. Moreover, at the same time, we exploit the work of weaving stories that echo from silences into shouting and from anonymous faces that demand their proper name. In this text, children mentioned in the documents and images collected as "disadvantaged minors" assume their due roles, rummage through historical narratives, and demand us to think about the requirements of the present and what stories we can still tell.
