LUSSAC, Ricardo Martins Porto. CAPOEIRA AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPORT AND SPORTS LEGISLATION IN BRAZIL UNTIL THE 1960s. Revista Teias [online]. 2024, vol.25, n.78, pp.279-297. Epub 11-Out-2024. ISSN 1982-0305. https://doi.org/10.12957/teias.2024.83751.
The practice of capoeira from the perspective of sport was characterized by the appropriation of specific bodily knowledge, modifying or extinguishing various aspects of this popular culture. In this sense, this article aimed to analyze the process of sportivization and institutionalization of capoeira in order to understand the development of sport and sports legislation and their respective relationships and implications with capoeira until the end of the 1960s. Better the development of the fighting game in the sporting and legislative sporting scenario and how the Brazilian State intervened in popular demonstrations and corporal practices. It was possible to verify that the process of sportivization and institutionalization of capoeira had significant and irreversible impacts by appropriating the popular body knowledge of capoeiragem, reconfiguring its knowledge and practices from another cultural perspective, the sporting one. Criminalized and carrying the stigma of the past, the practice of capoeira as a game and as a fight added new elements and gained new contours by engaging in a dialogue, throughout the 20th century, with the changes found in the new contexts where this practice manifested itself. Therefore, despite the historical and cultural importance of capoeira in Brazil, even with the constitutional guarantees of 1988 and with the recognition as intangible cultural heritage already in the 21st century, it is correct to state that capoeira, legitimately conceived as a national sport, will never managed to be considered with the necessary prominence in the legal universe and as one of the symbols of Brazil's cultural and sporting matrix.
